In April the student senate at the University of California, Berkeley, twice held all-night sessions to debate a proposal urging the school to divest from two US military companies "materially and militarily profiting" from the occupation of the Palestinian territories. Hundreds of people packed the hall, and statements in support of the measure were read aloud from leaders, including Noam Chomsky, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Naomi Klein and Alice Walker.

Direct actions, rallies and protests took place across Palestine and in numerous cities across the world on March 30, 2011, to commemorate the 35th annual Land Day, an important day of remembrance for six Palestinians with Israeli citizenship gunned down by Israeli forces in 1976 during a general strike in protest of expanded land confiscation inside the state. Land Day commemorative events took place in several areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn, where Adalah-NY and other solidarity activists staged protests in support of the boycott of Israeli products.

The fight between Israel's supporters and detractors bubbled over in March 2011 when New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center canceled a pro-Palestinian group's event for which the center had rented its space. The cancellation followed complaints from supporters of Israel within the gay community. The center’s move set off a heated dispute within the gay community. In this debate and elsewhere, Israel and its supporters are highlighting the Jewish state's progressive attitude toward gay and lesbian issues.

American folk music legend Pete Seeger has apparently joined the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. According to the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD), the American musician expressed regret for his previous support of an event sponsored by the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and threw his support for the BDS movement at a meeting in New York last month.

The 2011 American tour by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, a seven-city, eight-concert trek that reached Carnegie Hall, was meant to be a festive occasion. Unquestionably Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic make up a significant and valuable artistic alliance. Still, not everyone was of a mind to celebrate. Opponents of the Israeli government’s policies and actions toward the Palestinians have deemed the orchestra, in its role as one of Israel’s most visible and successful cultural exports, complicit, however quietly.
