SUBJECT:
Cancel Hebron Fund’s Fundraising Dinner at Citi Field over Group’s Support for Human Rights Violations & Discrimination

Date:
November 3, 2009

As diverse organizations working for human rights, social justice, and peace, we call on the New York Mets to cancel the November 21st fundraising dinner for the Hebron Fund that is scheduled to be held at the Caesars Club at Citi Field, the stadium of the New York Mets. By allowing the Hebron Fund to fundraise on its premises, the New York Mets will be directly aiding Hebron’s Jewish settlers, who are regularly described, both worldwide and among Israelis, as violent racists. The New York Mets will be facilitating activities that directly violate international law and the Obama administration’s call for a freeze in settlement construction, and that actively promote racial discrimination, and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homes in Hebron. A review of last year’s and this year’s Hebron Fund dinners also shows that some dinner honorees support violence and the terrorizing of Palestinians (see below).

Finally, The Hebron Fund has been the subject of complaints to the I.R.S. regarding its tax-exempt status. The complaints request investigations of allegations that it raises funds for the development of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Adalah-NY calls on people in New York and worldwide to work for the immediate release of Palestinian human rights defender Mohammad Othman. For the past two years, Adalah-NY has focused attention on the dire human rights situation in the West Bank farming village of Jayyous in which Mohammad Othman resides. Jayyous has been devastated by the construction on the village's land of the Zufim settlement by Israeli businessman Lev Leviev, as well as Israel's construction of its wall. Israel's wall, which cuts Jayyous off from most of its farmland, is intended to annex that land for the expansion of Leviev's Zufim settlement. The Israeli army has responded to Jayyous' protests against the construction of the wall and settlements with violence and arrests. Due to the involvement of Leviev's companies in settlement construction in Jayyous and other Palestinian villages, Adalah-NY and groups in Palestine and around the world have called for a global boycott of Leviev's businesses.

Within the overall context of Adalah-NY's concern for human rights defenders from Jayyous, we call on people to act to support the campaign outlined below to Free Mohammad Othman Now!

It's comin’ through the tears and angry shouts
From Palestinians on the ground without a house
It's comin’ from the just who realize they must
If peace shall ever come for anyone
From the victims losing homes
and white phosphorus still burning
From those children's broken bones
Hopes of refugees returning
The Boycott Call is comin'... to the USA

Come sit with us and you’ll hear a tale,
Of an occupation force,
That’s taking people’s land and lives,
With corporate help, of course.

Motorola is a firm,
That won’t pass up a buck.
They profit from their cell phones,
And practices that suck!

Lev Leviev’s company Africa-Israel is unable to repay its loans and is foundering. An Africa-Israel subsidiary, Danya Cebus, has built homes in a number of settlements on Palestinian land in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Reporting on Africa-Israel’s severe financial problems, the Associated Press noted that Leviev’s “construction activities in the West Bank have come under fire from settlement opponents in the US and Britain.” Initiated by Adalah-NY in November 2007, the worldwide campaign to boycott Leviev’s companies due to their settlement construction and other human rights abuses has achieved a number of successes that have helped to damage Leviev’s business and credibility. Highlights of Adalah-NY’s work to boycott Leviev’s companies include:
