Dear Amnesty International,

We, members of the Bil'in popular committee against the wall and settlements, have always appreciated Amnesty International’s role in the defense of human rights around the world and have recognized you as partners in our own struggle to defend our rights. We remember with great pleasure and pride your December, 2006 visit to our village to witness one of our protests. For these reasons we were surprised and deeply disturbed to learn that Amnesty International is sponsoring Leonard Cohen’s upcoming concert in Israel.

Open Letter to Amnesty International

July 30, 2009

In May, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) called on singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen to heed the Palestinian call for a cultural boycott of Israel and avoid complicity with Israel’s violations of international law by cancelling his planned September concert in Israel, particularly in view of Israel’s war crimes in Gaza earlier this year. Sadly, according to a July 28 article in the Jerusalem Post, Amnesty International USA has agreed to cooperate with Cohen in dealing with Israel on the basis of business as usual. Amnesty International USA will serve as sponsor of a new fund that will whitewash the money raised at Cohen’s concert in Israel by using it to finance programs for “peace.” Being one of the world’s strongest proponents of human rights and international law, you shall thus be subverting a non-violent, effective effort by Palestinian and international civil society to end Israel's violations of international law and human rights principles. We call on you to be true to your values and immediately withdraw support for Leonard Cohen’s ill-conceived concert in Israel.

GOODBYE MOTO, GOODBYE APARTHEID!

In the wake of Israel’s recent assault on the people of Gaza, and US government complicity in the attacks, it is more important than ever to challenge Israeli policies. When our governments do not enforce international law and ensure basic standards of decency, we the people have the responsibility to do so.

The Council on Ethics
Norwegian Government Pension Fund
Government of Norway

Dear Members of the Council on Ethics,

As diverse organizations concerned with human rights, international law, justice and peace in the Middle East, we are writing in support of the West Bank villages of Bil’in and Jayyous to call on the Norwegian government to conform with its own ethical guidelines[i] and divest its pension holdings from the company Africa-Israel, owned by Lev Leviev. According to a Norwegian Government report,[ii] as of December 31, 2008 a total of 6,665,567 Kroner in Norwegian government pension funds were invested in Africa-Israeli Investments and Africa-Israel Properties.

The Council on Ethics
Norwegian Government Pension Fund
Government of Norway

Dear Members of the Council on Ethics,

The people of Jayyous were deeply saddened to learn that the government of Norway has invested its pension funds in Lev Leviev’s company Africa-Israel. Leviev is the co-owner of Leader Management and Development, the company that is building the Israeli settlement of Zufim on our village’s land. According to media reports, Danya Cebus, a subsidiary of Leviev’s company Africa-Israel, has also built Israeli settlements on Bil’in’s land, as well as the settlements of Har Homa and Maale Adumim around Jerusalem. Leviev is destroying the olive groves and farms that have sustained Jayyous and other Palestinian villages for centuries, profiting from human rights abuses and violating international law. We call on the government and people of Norway to follow the lead of UNICEF, Oxfam, and most recently the British government, and end Norway’s relationship with Leviev’s companies due to their construction of Israeli settlements.

The Council on Ethics
Norwegian Government Pension Fund
Government of Norway

Dear Members of the Council on Ethics,

It is with great dismay that we learned that Norway, a strong supporter of human rights and peace in the Middle East, has invested its citizens’ pensions in a company, Lev Leviev’s Africa-Israel, that is building Israeli settlements on our village’s land, and is destroying our olive groves and any hope for justice and peace in Palestine. Our village of Bil’in has carried out a four year campaign of creative, nonviolent protests against the construction of Israel’s wall and the Israeli settlement of Mattityahu East on our village’s land, Last Friday, one of our residents, 31 year-old Bassem Abu Rahma, was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers during a nonviolent protest in Bil’in. We have also endured countless beatings from Israeli soldiers as a result of our protests, as well as bullets, teargas, invasions and arrests. We are sure that the people of Norway do not want to support the seizure of our farmland, and violence against our community. Therefore, we call on the government and people of Norway to take decisive steps, as the government of the United Kingdom has recently done, to end all business relationships with Lev Leviev due his companies’ construction of settlements.

To the NYU Administration:

Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East supports the Take Back NYU! coalition in their rightful demands for transparency, democracy and the protection of human rights at their university. Their efforts to bring light to these issues culminated in the occupation of the Kimmel Center this week, a measure taken only after many months of engagement with the NYU administration was met with apathy and silence. This left the students no recourse but to take drastic action.

Adalah-NY supports the Take Back NYU! coalition's inclusion of Gaza and Palestine in the struggle for social justice. We call on the university to address the students' demands, make transparent all financial transactions and investments, and end any complicity with Israeli apartheid.

The student protesters carry on a proud tradition of struggle for civil liberties, and against apartheid, wherever it might be, Gaza being the latest case in point. The NYU administration will certainly be judged in history as being on the wrong side of justice.

We denounce NYU administration's use of heavy-handed repression, suspension and eviction as a response to a non-violent student protest. Adalah-NY calls on the NYU administration to grant amnesty to all students involved and reinstate them immediately.

Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East is a grassroots strategic alliance of concerned organizations and individuals in New York, formed to demand an immediate, unconditional, and permanent end to U.S. and U.S.-sponsored Israeli aggression in the Middle East.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions are moral, nonviolent actions to pressure Israel to comply with basic principles of justice and international law, including ending the occupation, facilitating the right of Palestinian refugees to return and ensuring equal rights for all Palestinian citizens of Israel.

Take action now to stop Israeli atrocities in Gaza and put an end to Israeli crimes.
