Other Palestine Solidarity

Event

When: Friday, July 11, 6 PM

Where: Union Square, south side of square, near Broadway

Why: In response to the escalation of Israel’s ongoing violence against Palestinians, the Bil’in Popular Committee has called for an international day of action on July 11. Palestinian students from the Gaza Strip have called for international support in ending the Israeli military assault on the besieged Gaza Strip, and for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaigns targeting Israel.

As of Thursday night, Israel’s assault had killed over 80 Palestinians, half of them women and children. 500 others have been wounded, most of them civilians. Israel is bombing Palestinian homes in Gaza, killing whole families, a war crime according to PCHR in Gaza.

On March 14, Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine/Israel (VTJP) launched a campaign urging Ben & Jerry's to stop selling and catering to Jewish-only settlements in occupied Palestine. Since then, close to 3,500 people have signed a petition to the company, 650 emails were sent to Ben & Jerry's CEO, and more than 80 organizations have endorsed the campaign. To all those who have taken action so far, VTJP would like to say: Thank you. It makes a difference.

In June 2011, eleven indigenous and women of color scholars, activists, and artists visited occupied Palestine. In January 2012, a diverse group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and trans activists, academics, artists, and cultural workers from the US participated in a solidarity tour in Palestine. Both groups returned to publish statements about what they saw and learned, the connections they made between and among struggles, and their unequivocal support for the Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it guarantees rights for Palestinian people. Members of these delegations will share their reflections on solidarity in the context of their recent trips, and offer suggestions for moving forward.
