Israeli government is no “Champion” of freedom of expression

To PEN American Center:

We, the undersigned, including participants at PEN World Voices Festival, ask the Festival to reject support from the Embassy of Israel. The Embassy of Israel is listed among the “Champions” of the World Voices Festival, and as a sponsor of a panel.

Given PEN American Center’s mission of supporting freedom of expression, it is deeply regrettable that the Festival has chosen to accept sponsorship from the Israeli government, even as it intensifies its decades-long denial of basic rights to the Palestinian people, including the frequent targeting of Palestinian writers and journalists.

Abstract:

BDS struck early victories in 2010 when Elvis Costello and the late Gil-Scott Heron cancelled planned appearances. In late November last year, eight artists with ties to New York—including Grietzer’s friends Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone—stated their endorsement of the cultural boycott of Israel in a new video. Alongside it, Grietzer co-authored an article with the English composer Brian Eno that laid out the rationale for the boycott.

Abstract:

We understand the economic boycott. Money talks, after all. No regime is likely to change until it is forced to, and that often means affecting the bottom line. But an educational and cultural boycott? Many feel that the arts shouldn’t be part of the worldwide BDS campaign against Israel, because intellectual exchange is important and it alienates those working inside Israel for change. But as RIHAM BARGHOUTI shows, art and politics cannot be separated in Palestine, and trying to pretend that cultural exchanges with Israel could ever be acceptable is simply ludicrous.

Since April 2004, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) has called upon intellectuals and academics worldwide to “comprehensively and consistently boycott all Israeli academic and cultural institutions as a contribution to the struggle to end Israel’s occupation, colonization and system of apartheid”, BDS Movement states.

“How can I perform in Israel when millions of Palestinians cannot attend?” asks renowned musician Roger Waters in a new video.

The video, released by Adalah-N.Y.: The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel, features influential New York City-based artists calling on other cultural workers to pledge their support for the boycott of Israel, in protest of the country’s illegal 48-year occupation of the Palestinian territories and constant human rights abuses against indigenous Palestinians.
