Adalah-NY Statement

Adalah-NY: Campaign for the Boycott of Israel is a local, grassroots, non-hierarchical volunteer-only group of concerned individuals that advocates for justice, equality, and human rights for the Palestinian people through educational activities and campaign-building. Adalah-NY organizes in support of the 2005 call by Palestinian civil society organizations to maintain non-violent means of protest -- including boycotts, divestment, and sanctions -- until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of international law by:

  • Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
  • Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
  • Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.

BACKGROUND

In August 2006, Adalah-NY (formerly the Ad-Hoc Coalition for Justice in the Middle East) began organizing actions in response to the escalation of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip at the end of June and the subsequent Israeli war on Lebanon in July 2006. Adalah-NY has carried out numerous street protests and educational forums focusing on Israel's assault on Gaza and war against Lebanon, the US' threatened attack on Iran, the US and Israeli Apartheid Walls with Mexico and Palestine, and the rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel. Adalah-NY has been participating with other groups in Israeli Apartheid Week in NYC, events against the Iraq war, events commemorating the Nakbah, and immigrant rights protests. Since November 2007, Adalah-NY has been conducting one of the most successful Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns in the United States in line with the call for BDS by Palestinian Civil Society. In addition, Adalah-NY has co-sponsored cultural events, political forums, and other political events. In 2010, the New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel (NYCBI) merged with Adalah-NY. Adalah means justice in Arabic.

ANTIRACISM

As Adalah-NY works to end the racist Israeli regime of military occupation, apartheid, and colonization, we commit to a principled stand against all forms of racism and other oppression. Adalah-NY strives to ensure that our actions and the actions of those within our organization promote an antiracist perspective and do not support or perpetuate bigotry. Just as in heeding the BDS call we take leadership from Palestinians, we recognize that oppressed communities everywhere are best positioned to determine how to end their oppression. In the US, we are deeply enmeshed in a society shaped by settler colonialism and slavery, so we must be active and deliberate in upholding these principles.

Black Lives Matter. Adalah-NY endorses the Vision for Black Lives platform created by the Movement for Black Lives Coalition. We aspire to integrate into our work the aims and principles it outlines, as well as its broader vision, and support in the building of a world without white supremacy and all the institutions that reinforce it.
