Palestinians Tell the World: Sovereignty Means Securing ALL Our Rights!

Palestinians and their supporters everywhere are mobilizing to remind the world of their right to self-determination. In New York we are marching to the United Nations because the world's attention is focused on the vote on Palestine scheduled to take place there.

For over six decades, the U.N. has approved numerous resolutions promising Palestinians their basic rights, none of which has been implemented. We come to the U.N. to demand:

Press Release

New York - On Thursday evening, Palestinians and human rights advocates from around the tri-state area marched through the rain to the United Nations headquarters. With the world’s attention focused on the scheduled vote for Palestinian statehood, demonstrators converged to demand sovereignty, equality for Palestinian citizens of Israel, and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes, in accordance with UNGA Resolution 194.

Abstract:

Direct actions, rallies and protests took place across Palestine and in numerous cities across the world on March 30, 2011, to commemorate the 35th annual Land Day, an important day of remembrance for six Palestinians with Israeli citizenship gunned down by Israeli forces in 1976 during a general strike in protest of expanded land confiscation inside the state. Land Day commemorative events took place in several areas of Manhattan and Brooklyn, where Adalah-NY and other solidarity activists staged protests in support of the boycott of Israeli products.

As organizers of New York City’s Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW), we are dismayed to learn that New York’s LGBT Center has canceled the scheduled March 5 “Party to End Apartheid” that was to take place there.  We are equally dismayed that the Center also has banned one of the organizers of this event, and a member of our coalition, the Siegebusters Working Group, from holding its regular meeting at the Center. Israeli Apartheid Week, now entering its seventh year internationally and its fifth year in New York City, is a series of events designed to educate people about Israel’s apartheid nature and to build Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns in concordance with the just demands of Palestinian civil society.

In 2008, The LGBT Center hosted an Israeli Apartheid Week event discussing the boycott campaign against Israeli billionaire, diamond manufacturer, and settlement builder Lev Leviev.  This year’s IAW in New York includes conversations about BDS as a tactic, discussions of recent protests and revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa, a book release party for NY spoken word artist Remi Kanazi, and a discussion with queer theorist Judith Butler and filmmaker John Greyson. These events will be taking place in many venues across the city, including university campuses and churches.

(to the tune of "Which Side Are You On?")

I was sittin’ home watching CNN
Listening to government lies
They say that Israel must be safe
But what about Palestine?

CHORUS:
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Justice or oppression?
Which side are you on?
