Protest Idan Raichel, Cultural Ambassador for Israel

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY, October 17, 2015 – On Friday evening, 60 New York human rights advocates protested on the sidewalk outside a solo concert by Israeli singer Idan Raichel at the City Winery in Manhattan (Photos). Idan Raichel calls himself a cultural ambassador for Israel and is an outspoken and uncritical promoter of the Israeli army. Raichel’s actions support the Israeli government’s Brand Israel public relations campaign, which uses art and music to distract from Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights.

Abstract:

Over the sound of clinking wine glasses and hushed conversation in Hebrew, Idan Raichel performed a solo show at City Winery in Tribeca this past Friday night.

City Winery, 155 Varick Street, between Vandam & Spring Streets
Friday, October 16, 6:30–8 PM

As Israel escalates its assault on the Palestinian people, join Adalah-NY and respond to the call from the Palestinian BDS National Committee! Support the cultural boycott of Israel!

Join Adalah-NY and friends on Friday October 16 to protest a concert by Israeli musician Idan Raichel, an enthusiastic promoter of the Israeli army and supporter of the Israeli government. With chants and music by NYC’s Rude Mechanical Orchestra, we'll tell City Winery and NYC cultural institutions, art should be for liberation, not for whitewashing occupation!

Idan Raichel sang for Israeli soldiers before, during, and after Israel’s attack on Gaza in 2014. He recently performed to welcome American Jews who had just arrived in Israel to enlist in the Israeli army. Raichel kicked off his last US tour by attending a "Friends of the IDF" fundraiser, and also supports the US non-profit "Thank Israeli Soldiers." He calls himself a cultural ambassador for Israel. An Israeli government official called him "maybe the best ambassador that Israel has." Raichel’s actions support the Israeli government's "Brand Israel" public relations campaign, which uses the arts and culture to cover up Israel’s violent repression of Palestinian rights.

Want to do more to support the Palestinian Call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions?

The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the Palestinian leadership of the global BDS movement, calls on people of conscience around the world to support Palestinians in their quest for freedom at this crucial moment by stepping up BDS activities against Israel’s regime of oppression. Read the full statement from the Palestinian BDS National Committee here.

In particular, and related to the current mass revolt on the streets of Palestine, we call on supporters of the Palestinian struggle to:

§  Build awareness about Palestinian rights under international law and support for BDS through media outreach, including social media;

§  Pressure parliaments to impose a military embargo on Israel;

§  Campaign against Israeli military companies such as Elbit Systems;

§  Support boycott and divestment campaigns against complicit companies, such as G4S and HP, that are most blatantly complicit in Israel’s infrastructure of oppression;

§  Pass effective and strategic, not just symbolic, BDS resolutions in unions, academic associations, student governments and social movements that can lead to concrete measures, and enhance the cultural boycott of Israel;

§  Consider legal action against Israeli criminals (soldiers, settlers, officers and decision-makers) and against executives of corporations that are implicated in Israel’s crimes and violations of international law.
